Exploring Hidden Jamaica
Jamaica is famous for its astounding azure beaches, postcard perfect mountain scenery and rhythmic reggae beats. However, this course will allow the curious to go beyond the island's stunning visuals by diving into the expansive History and cultural depth that makes this little country so unique.
We will begin by exploring Jamaican folk music and storytelling traditions that connect us to the African Diaspora and the world at large. We will then discover Jamaica's natural healing resources with a strong focus on healing herbs and potent mineral spas. Several religions on the island are steeped in African mysticism and dance. There will be discussions on the religious rituals of Obeah, Kumina and other spiritual practices. Jamaican dialect or Patois has its origins in many cultures. Participants will learn the popular vocabulary and phrases that will make them feel like a native. Welcome to Jamaica!
