Irish History & Culture

This course will examine the history and culture of the Irish. Students will develop an overview of the impact the Irish have made on the world. Classes will study early Irish History and migration, the Potato Famine, Irish Diaspora, Easter Rising 1916, the rise and fall of Charles Stewart Parnell, Michael Collins, The Troubles (Republic of Ireland and the North of Ireland also known as Ulster), Bobby Sands, The Good Friday Agreement to the current battle for Ireland to become self-ruled. Students will also learn about the legacy of various Irish Americans such as the Kennedy's.

Students will become familiar with Irish Writers and Poets, along with traditional Irish music. Class will openly discuss the merits of the arts coming from Ireland including writers such as James Joyce, Brendan Behan, Jonathan Swift to Poets such as W.B. Yeats, Seamus Heaney, and Patrick Kavanaugh, to playwrights such as Oscar Wilde, George Bernard Shaw to contemporary writers, musicians and poets such as Larry Kirwan, Shane MacGowan/The Pogues and Paul Muldoon. Students will also have a crash course on the Irish language (Gaelic) and slang.
